Pairing: Charlie Dalton x OC!FemReader
Warnings: 18+, mentions of smut, language, drug/alcohol use, mentions of depression, harsh topics, angst, summer fling, fluff.

CHAOS DREAMING!
SYNOPSIS: aurora henson cannot stand economics. . . the summer before her junior year only highlights this when she crosses paths with a seemingly rebellious group of boys from welton academy, mixed about at a fine arts camp they’ve been shipped off to. little does she know, they’re fighting to rewrite their lives, too—which inspires her to live a little on the edge before she goes back to her all-girls boarding school next fall 𝟅𝟈
author’s note! you can find part three here! also—so happy this fic is coming into its own :') dabbling with the mix of literate & social media au has been so fun
PART FOUR — CLANDESTINE
ENTER AURORA HENSON. . .
The girl had been sprawled out in the grass, unable to sleep and unable to stop thinking. She’d been here in Vermont for a week now—and through new friends, rebellion, and creative bursts, she couldn’t stop herself from wondering more about Charlie Dalton.
Neil meant all the best for Aurora by introducing her to his friends, but the meeting only drove the girl towards insanity.
It was crazy of her—she didn’t know Charlie, and she certainly didn’t have a connection with him.
She couldn’t.
Hell, she could barely have that with herself. What made her think she’d be capable of having that with someone else?
She sighed.
The wind picked up, the leaves rattling above her smaller frame. A few fell down, landing in her hair and sticking to the fabric of her sweater. It didn’t matter if it was summertime—if the wind was blowing, she’d wear long sleeves. That’s how it worked.
Too lost in her own loneliness, she lacked proper focus as someone creeped up behind her, their feet rummaging through the grass as they ascended the hill. Spooked by the sudden noises, Aurora found herself jolting from her spot, relieved to see Neil approaching her.
His hair was a mess, and she assumed he couldn’t settle down, either.
“You scared me,” she mumbled.
Neil smiled, taking a seat across from her. He pressed his back against the tree trunk. “Sorry, Rora.”
“All good,” she answered. “Can’t sleep?”
“Nope,” Neil said. “Charlie’s been keeping us up.”
Aurora’s eyebrow furrowed. “Oh,” she muttered.
“Oh?” Neil repeated her response back to her, eyeing her expression through the darkness of the summer evening. There was something there—he could sense it.
Aurora blinked. “What else am I supposed to say?”
“I dunno,” he mumbled. “Sympathy would be nice.”
She exhaled. “I’m sorry that Charlie is keeping you and your friends up. There, is that better?”
Neil laughed. “Much better.”
There was a slight hint of humor in their conversation, though Neil was catching onto something he wasn’t sure Aurora knew about yet. Or, maybe she knew, but found comfort in hiding it—hoping he wouldn’t find it.
She and Charlie were more alike than he thought.
They both carried this hefty self-guilt, though Charlie covered his with pride and sarcasm. The two had only shared one conversation—the clandestine introduction under this exact oak tree, where Aurora realized there were more people out there like her.
Perhaps that scared her. Perhaps she was intrigued by Charlie, but wouldn’t admit it due to her parents and the weight of expectations—both academically and emotionally.
Neil kept all of this in mind as he spoke to the girl, curious and prepared to crack the case. “You look busy,” he said.
“Hm?” Aurora hummed.
“There’s something going on inside your head,” he reiterated. “What’s up?”
Aurora had forgotten how well Neil could read her.
After years of friendship, it was expected by now, but it shocked her nonetheless. The blonde exhaled tiredly. “I came here to discover my passions and finally break free. Meeting your friends—it showed me I wasn’t alone in that, you know? That scared me. The idea that there’s so many of us with the same passions, but we can’t act on them.”
Neil hummed. “How is that scary? Wouldn’t it be the opposite? To know you’re not alone, wouldn’t that give you some sort of hope?”
“I mean—I guess so?” Aurora hadn’t thought of it that way, not until now. She’d been so pessimistic.
“Look,” Neil eyed the girl. “I get it. I know you. We’re all here for the same reasons. I think you should take that and run with it, yeah?”
“How do you mean?” She asked.
“You know what I mean,” he replied cryptically. “Make connections, get to know people, break free. Don’t stay holed up in your shared bunk with a journal in your lap. Who knows, a conversation or two with the right person might just reveal new information.”
Aurora’s heartbeat quickened. Neil knew too much.
“You’re a pain,” she joked quietly.
He chuckled. “Yeah, yeah.”
THE NEXT MORNING. . .
It was a dreary start to the day. Aurora was drowsy, her legs covered in bug bites from the constant grass-sitting. She itched at them as she tossed and turned in her bed, the other girls in her bunk seemingly dispersed amongst the Vermont campgrounds.
In the short, solemn silence, she reached for her phone. Birds chirped outside—a sense of hope and confidence surging through her veins.
Her fingers grazed over the rings of her journal as she picked her phone off the dresser, the metal cool to the touch. Biting at her lip, she unlocked the screen and typed aimlessly, her thumbs trembling over the keyboard.

Dead Poet [Intro]
[Charlie Dalton x Reader]
Requested: No
Words: 1,830
A/N This is a new series I may potentially make. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I absolutely adore the character of Charlie. I’m trying to do passion projects to keep me motivated so I can get back into writing. I hate this is as short as it is, but to be fair its an intro. I’d like to continue this and make it a short series with a few installments, but who knows, maybe it will happen maybe it won’t. Anyways, this is unedited so apologies for any grammar mistakes.
You could feel the cool evening breeze sink into your bones, your arms instinctively wrapping the large overcoat you wore tighter over your shoulders. You were weaving your way in between numerous trees in the woods near Welton Academy, your friend Neil leading the way. You weren’t entirely sure where you were going, only getting vague descriptions from Neil- who insisted the night was going to be the “most fun you’ve ever had”.
You had met Neil at the local auditions for Midsummer Nights Dream, the two of you immediately hitting it off and rehearsing with together in the audition waiting room. You had been overjoyed when you found out he was cast as Puck, and you were cast as Titania. The two of you had quickly become close friends throughout rehearsals, Neil becoming your best friend in no time as the two of you bonded over your mutual passion for acting. It was a few weeks into Midsummer rehearsals when Neil had casually brought up the Dead Poets Society, you had heard about the boys before but he had never brought up this secret ‘society’ before. It wasn’t long after he had invited you to attend the meetings, insisting that you would love it and would get along great with his friends from Welton.
You were in no reason to turn him down, so you agreed. That is how you ended up where you were now- in the middle of the pitch black mangrove of trees, rushing behind Neil, with only a single flashlight to lead the way to your secret destination. You could feel the nerves rise within you, boiling upwards from your stomach into your throat as you saw the opening of a cave in the distant glow of Neil’s flashlight. You could hear the faint chatter and laughter of boys reverberating out of the cave and into the crisp winter air, smoke rising into the sky out of what appeared to be a crevice in the caves roof. Soon enough you and Neil were both climbing down into the cave opening, greeted by the laughter and smiles from three teenage boys. They all welcomed Neil warmly, clearly seeing him as a leader of sort, though they froze up the moment you came into their line of view.
Neil let out a small laugh as he noticed the way Cameron's mouth seemed to drop open once he caught sight of you. You could feel yourself growing self conscious as all the attention now seemed focused on you, you hadn’t dressed up, seeing as Neil told you it was an easy going and relaxed meeting. You had worn a simple pair of black cigarette pants, a brown belts, black Maryjane's, a Ridgeway High School sweater, and had your hair down the way you usually did. Neil let out a small cough getting the boys attention before speaking up, “This is y/n l/n, a friend of mine from the theater, she’s playing the fairy queen."
“Nice to meet you all, I’ve heard a lot about you from Neil. So this is the famous Dead Poets Society?”
Neil opened his arms wide as if to show off the small cave with a wide grin on his boyish features, “The one and only. Now take a seat, that’s Cameron, Meeks, Pitts, and Todd. Lets get this meeting under way gentlemen.” All the boys visibly relaxed, going about their usual routine as they all got comfortable, Meeks sitting to your right and Todd to your left. You watched as Neil pulled an old book out, opening instinctively to the title page to read whatever was written aloud, the other boys chanting it with him.
“ I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately... I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life! To put to rout all that was not life...”
They were all cut off as rustling and giggles began sounding from the entrance of the cave, everyone glancing over as three figure entered one by one. You figured it must be one of the missing members, though you were shocked to see two other girls entering the cave alongside him. You couldn’t help the breathy laugh that escaped you lips as you heard Cameron who was sitting across from you, “Oh my god.”
The girls stood awkwardly next to the boy who had entered alongside them, a black beret sitting atop his head as a large grin was plastered to his face. After some readjusting everyone began getting settled in once more, the girls sitting down delicately, though their posture was slightly uncomfortable. You figured maybe sitting in a damp cave while it was freezing outside wasn’t the way they had hoped to spend their evening.
You watched closely as Charlies voice rang throughout the small cave, “Guys, I have an announcement to make. In keeping with the spirit of passionate experimentation of the Dead Poets, I’m giving up the name Charlie Dalton. From now on, call me Nuwanda.” You had to hold back a laugh as several of the poet society members let their own chuckles escape at the name, Neil's face even morphing into one of confusion and amusement.
“We gonna have a meeting or what?”
Your eyes flicked over to Gloria as she spoke up, “Yeah. If you guys don’t have a meeting, how do we know if we wanna join?”
“Join?” Neil's eyes flicked to you for a moment before returning to the book, flipping through the book to find a poem, only to be cut off by Charlie- or rather Nuwanda. “Shall I compare thee to a summers day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.”
“That's so sweet.”
“I made it up just for you.”
“You did?”
I let out a small chuckle of disbelief at the cluelessness of the blonde bimbo sitting near me. It was clear she had no idea who Shakespeare was, and definitely didn’t know his works- despite that recitation being from one of his most famous works. You watched amused as Gloria turned expectantly to Charlie, who was more than happy to woo her as well.
“I’ll write one for you too, Gloria. She walks in beauty like the night...” He paused for a moment, feigning though as though he truly was making it up on the spot. “She walks in beauty like the night. Of cloudless slimes and starry skies. All that’s best, dark and bright, meet in her aspect and her eyes.” Her eyes widened as she let out a breath of flattery, “That’s beautiful.” You watched as Nuwanda’s grin grew wider, looking to the boys in a knowing manner before glancing back at Gloria. His eyes flitted across the cave for a moment, his eyes meeting your for what felt like forever but you knew was most likely only a fleeting second. His honey eyes were penetrating and passionate, holding your attention effortlessly, and more a moment you understood what caused the girls to believe every word he said without doubt.
You were only snapped out of your thought when he spoke up, “How about beautiful? Would you allow me the pleasure of coming up with a poem for you, a lot of things are coming to mind.” I was caught off guard for a moment before letting a coy smile play across my lips. “That depends, are they going to be original works? Because I’ve already read Lord Byron and Shakespeare, beautiful but not your words.” You watched as the two girls eyes flicked to you, annoyance coming across their faces, Tina speaking up. “I would recognize Shakespeare if I heard it, those words were meant for me. Nuwanda’s a poet, why else would he be in a poet society?” You watched a amused grin flicked across Charlies lips as his eyes remained on your figure. You let out a sigh and shrugged, “Suppose I was mistaken, I’m sure Nuwanda spoke from his heart.” That seemed to relieve the girls annoyances, though you sent a playful wink towards Charlie afterwards which he quickly reciprocated.
You couldn’t explain quite what it was about Charlie that caused him to be so devastatingly attractive, but whatever it was, it was drawing you in more than you cared to admit. Your eyes left Charlie and instead glanced at Neil who only chuckled and sent you a knowing smile. Neil had told you in the past about Charlie, always saying that he felt out of all of his friends, you and him would get along the best. Which you weren’t going to deny- Neil was spot on. Even with the other girls there, it seemed you and Charlie got on the most, sharing laughs as the meeting went on- the two of you having instant chemistry.
The night when on as you supposed their normal meetings would, smoking a few cigarettes, snacking on the pile of food the boys brought from the mess hall, drinking some alcohol, and reciting new and old poetry. Overall it was a fun and relaxed evening- a nice break from the seriousness of school and the long rehearsals for Midsummer. The night ended however with a bit of drama- Charlie revealing that he had published a article in the Welton Academy school paper in the name of the Dead Poets in order to protest that girls should be allowed to attend.
This didn’t go over well with the other members- most notably Cameron who seemed exceedingly paranoid about getting found out as being involved. The issue was resolved as Nuwanda stated they would take the full blame if things got too heated and administration was looking for the Society. After the meeting concluded, the girls left together, Charlie and the other boys putting out the fire and cleaning up the mess within the cave.
You watched in confusion as Neil stood up atop one of the rocks in the cave, his head nearly touching the highest part of the ceiling. “I want to nominate a new member of the Dead Poets Society, y/n l/n.” All the boys eyes flicked from Neil, to you, then back to Neil. “All members in agreement say aye, anyone in disagreement raise your hand.” Unanimously all the boys said aye, Charlies eyes catching yours, Neil flashing you a grin as you stood in shock. Neil cleared his throat to regain your attention, “Well y/n, everyone's in agreement except you. Wanna be a Dead Poet?”
Your eyes scanned the boys faces, all of which were grinning brightly at you, your eyes landing on Charlies. He nodded softly at you, a smirk on his lips as he urged you to accept the offer. You could feel a small smile appear on your lips as your eyes returned to Neil who was grinning hopefully at you.
“I accept.”
Charlies voice piped up, “Welcome to the DPS.”
You let out a small laugh at this and reconnected you e/c eyes with his deep brown ones, “Thanks Nuwanda.”

25 Days of Christmas - 1k Follower Celebration Rules
I am very excited to post this! My idea for a celebration is to do 25 days of Christmas and have everyone choose a character and a prompt.
I’ve gone ahead and collected a prompt list that everyone is free to choose from but original requests are also welcome (as long as they’re holiday related)! I’ll post the prompt and the character on a list so I can keep track, but also so you can see what’s already been requested. I might do more than one prompt a day, depending on the amount of requests I get.
Here is the prompt list!
These are the official rules for the celebration;
-send an ask with the character you want along with one of the prompts below
-no more than one prompt can be requested
-i reserve the right to deny a request for whatever reason (with one prompt list being used, i don't want it to be repetitive)
I’m really excited to do this and I hope you are too!!
I also made a list of characters I definitely want to write for. If you don’t see a character below then send me an ask about it and we’ll see. Everyone on the list is a character that I will definitely write (and most likely have inspiration for).
Characters below the cut

June 4th 1961
Charlie wouldn’t consider himself much of a nature guy, but anything would do if it meant getting out of his parent’s house sooner. He had already been accepted to Columbia in the Fall but he didn’t have enough money to rent an apartment in the city quite yet. Which is how he discovered Adler’s West Lake Resort and Lodge. His counselor said the school looked fondly onto volunteers who worked there in the summer. So Charlie packed everything up and got himself the job. After all how bad could it be? A summer away in the Catskills, free food, free boarding, and a few rowing lessons here and there. He could handle it.
“Alright honey, do you need anything for your drive?” his mother asked from the porch, watching as he loaded his stuff in the back of the station wagon. She tried to pretend that she didn’t notice he had packed everything but a small part of her heart broke. This was truly it.
“I’m fine Mom, I promise” he told her, mind stuck on the five hour drive ahead of him.
“Okay honey, make sure you call and let us know when you get there” and both of them pretended not to notice the small chuckle that left his fathers mouth as he read the paper on the patio furniture.
“I will and you have the address and number to the resort already” Charlie reminded her, jogging up the porch where he quickly towered over his mother’s height. She hated how tall he had gotten, a grown man now, no longer her little boy.
“Be safe and good luck at school” she told him before pulling him into a hug. Charlie squeezed her right back, thankful to at least have a loving mother.
“I will Mom, thank you” he told her and she sighed, fighting back tears that threatened to spill over. Her only child driven away by the harsh expectations of her husband. He had been hurt so much by the world already and the minute he graduates high school he is off and running away from her.
“I’m about to head off, sir” Charlie says as he pulls away from his mom, walking to stand in front of his father.
“Good, you wouldn’t want to hit the afternoon rush traffic outside of the city” his father mutters, hands flipping the page of his newspaper. He felt that he owed nothing to his son. The only things his son had ever done was get himself kicked out of the best school in Vermont and cost him a lot of money pulling strings to still get him in an ivy league school.
“Exactly so thank you sir” Charlie said, holding his hand out and waiting for his father to bid him goodbye. He never cared much about what his father thought of him but he also figured if his father didn’t say some sort of goodbye he would always have control over some aspect of his life.
“Goodbye son, don’t dick around too much. That’s my name you’re tainting when you do that” his father responded, hand sliding into his own and firmly shaking it.
“I’ll do my best sir, I promise” Charlie said before letting his father’s hand go one last time. He was going to use these next four years to his benefit and take the well deserved break he needed. He couldn’t believe he spent all those years at Welton wishing his parents wanted him around more. What a waste.
“I guess we’ll see” is the last thing he says to him before returning his attention to the paper in his hand. Sighing Charlie brushes his hands down the front of his button up shirt and turns back to his Mom with a soft smile.
“Goodbye Mama” he says, swiftly kissing her cheek and the tears finally break through and cascade down her cheeks as Charlie jogs to his car that holds every piece of his belongings. He knew he didn’t need all of it for camp but he also knew his car could act as a private storage locker so he wouldn’t have to come back here before classes started.
“Bye baby, we’ll miss you” she calls out as the car rumbled to life and Charlie waved a hand out as he shifted the car in gear and headed down the long driveway. He knew his father would more than likely not miss him but it was kind that his mother still tried, so he waved his hand out his open window for her until she could no longer see him driving down the road.
The drive was fairly easy. Only two missed turns and one incident with a wrinkled map and Charlie was finally pulling his car up to the main lodge, the sun casted over the large lake beside it. It was quiet since campers wouldn’t be here until next week and Charlie was surprised to feel peace from the quiet and warmth that resonated in the area around him. Killing the engine he stepped out the car and started for the doors, prepared for direction to his cabin for the next three months.
“Hello camper!” a chirpy blonde girl perked up as he pushed through the cabin doors. He briefly wondered if it was an act, to be so excited about not having a real shower and mosquotio bites for three months on end. Yet the bright white smile on her face suggested otherwise.
“Hey” Charlie muttered, not one for too much enthusiasm. Actually he was pretty sure he hadn't been excited about anything since his Junior year of high school.
“Did you just arrive?” she asked, hands reaching for a large book that Charlie figured held all the information on every worker for the entirety of the camp. It's possible the smile could be fake but someone with this much responsibility had to enjoy this life somewhat.
“Yeah, Charles Dalton. I’m a Columbia volunteer, new rowing instructor” he said finally reaching the desk, hands falling and crossing over the top. He just wanted to find a bed and lay in it, especially after that drive.
“Well welcome Charles, let me grab your orientation packet and parking pass” she grinned still as cheerful and Charlie nodded, almost scared by how happy she is.
“Just Charlie is fine” he told her and she nodded before bouncing off and finding all the things he needed to get settled in. After only a few minutes she had a small stack of papers set in front of him.
“Okay so everything you need to know you can find in here. Cabin number, work schedule, map of the resort, and anything else you can imagine. When you get to your lodge you’ll find your walkie and uniform waiting for you. Meals and everything are all inclusive for staff and we hope you have a great summer” she finished her well practiced spiel and Charlie smiled as he collected the thick packet from in front of him.
“Thanks..”
“Josie” she filled in and he nodded.
“Thanks Josie, see you around” he tells her before heading back towards the front doors and where he left his car. Using the map to find employee parking Charlie found himself unloading the two suitcases he packed specifically meant for camp and locking up the rest of his belongings in his car. It was a bit harder to find the cabins but finally he was in the upper woods, brown buildings matching the next all in various rows. A big fire burning with a few people chattering around it and Charlie quickly looked for cabin number sixteen.
Valerie had only been here an hour and already smelled like wood smoke. This wouldn't have been the case if she didn't somehow end up in a cabin with Chrissy Norwick. Valerie didn't necessarily mind the girl but she liked having a chill first day and Chrissy already had five girls compiled in the small shared cabin as she retold the stories of each date she had with Nate Fanning over the school year. She knew it would be the same thing, Nate would appear at camp and pretend Chrissy didn't exist, that was until the fall when he no longer had all of the camps options to focus on.
So Valerie sat by the fire with a few old friends she had been volunteering with since she was sixteen and listened to their much more relaxed conversation as she waited for her cabin to be much less crowded. It was then she saw a taller boy, chestnut hair falling in his eyes, as he walked the trail up into the cabins. It wasn't often new volunteers came around here so she was immediately perking up. He was handsome, in a soft way. A suitcase hung from each of his arms and she could tell from the hike and the strain off the weight, his chest was puffing out broadly. The small beads of sweat collecting at his hair line convinced her to approach him before no one else could.
"Hey, you need some help?" she curiously asked, straightening out her shirt as she appeared on the trail beside him. He jumped only lightly due to her quick appearance and she tried to hide her amusment.
"I’m fine" he muttered even though his hair was now starting to stick to his forehead from sweat.
“First rule as a staff camper, no job is too small to ask for help” and she was snatching one of the suit cases out of his hand that had been weighing him down the entire trek up the hill. Realizing she wasn’t going away anytime soon he finally took a moment to take her in. The white staff shirt laid across her shoulders and the eagle symbol stretched across the center of her chest. He admired her full hips and bright smile. Her long brunette hair tied high in a ponytail that hung in curly strands down her back. She was pretty and he was supposed to last all summer around girls like this. He prayed she wasn’t a lifeguard.
“For the record, I never asked” he told her before starting towards the cabins where she followed quickly behind.
“Well what cabin is yours then Mr. Independent?” she asked, ignoring his previous statement, and the boy sighed. He was realizing pretty quickly that most people around here were pretty cheerful and stubborn.
“Sixteen and the name is Charlie” he caved and finally she was beaming a smile back at him that made her eyes sparkle. He hated that her eyes sparkled.
“Well Charlie I’m Valerie and you’re in luck. I just so happen to be in cabin fifteen” and she was walking along and leaving him behind, going in a direction all too familiar to her. Charlie was a bit shocked by her ease but followed nonetheless as she led him to a destination he had been counting on the last five hours.
"So clearly you're new, so I'll share some wise wisdom as a camper of three years" Valerie told him, thrilled to have something to do other than stare at a campfire in the middle of the day. The June sun was already hot enough. "Never use the showers on the south end. Theyre used the least so not only do they include a variety of bugs you've never seen before but they’re also the showers that lose hot water first"
"This is not making this anymore exciting" Charlie says and the laugh that comes from Valerie surprises them both. Charlie hates the way the sound wraps around his heart and makes him content.
"If Big Al enters the bathrooms wait at least thirty minutes before going in. If you don't know who that is you'll find out fairly quickly. If it's an emergency we're surrounded by woods for a reason" and now Charlie is the one laughing which based on his attitude when they first met has Valerie fairly surprised.
"Lastly tuesday nights mystery dinner sounds fun but it's actually a mix of leftovers from the previous week so we have staff dinner here" Valerie says just as they approach cabin sixteen only to hear the girl laughs from the one beside it.
"Shouldn't you be in there giggling away?" Charlie asks as he takes his suitcase from her and sets them both on the small porch step.
"God no, no use giggling about cute boys inside when I can be out here talking to them" and much to Charlie's surprise she winks at him as if it was the most natural thing in the world. It’s so quick he's almost convinced he didn't see it.
"You seem to have it all figured out Valerie" Charlie says and she softly shrugs, glancing up at the tall trees above them. Birds chirp and in a few hours the cicadas would buzz and she'd finally be right back at home.
"I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting to share but when I remember I promise to tell you. In the mean time Charlie you can find me at cabin fifteen or the lake" she says, oddly comforted by the new guy herself. There was something nice about knowing she got to be the one to greet him here.
"Why the lake?" he curiously asks as Valerie moves to walk away and she flashes a quick grin at him, fingers gliding through her curly brown hair and Charlie nervously gulps.
"I'm a lifeguard" she informs him and for the first time for the entirety of this conversation Charlie accepts that he's screwed. Valerie was not the kind of girl you ignore despite how badly he wanted too. Now worst of all he had to spend every single day of the summer with her in tiny red bathingsuits.
"Of course you are” he says and she quickly flashes him a grin before starting back the way they came, ignoring the group of girls in her very own cabin. Charlie hates how he watches her walk away, admiring her long tan legs in her tight jean shorts. It had been ten minutes and he was already screwed.
“Shit”
Happy 35th Anniversary to DPS. This is my love letter to this film <3

CHAOS DREAMING!
SYNOPSIS: aurora henson cannot stand economics. . . the summer before her junior year only highlights this when she crosses paths with a seemingly rebellious group of boys from welton academy, mixed about at a fine arts camp they’ve been shipped off to. little does she know, they’re fighting to rewrite their lives, too—which inspires her to live a little on the edge before she goes back to her all-girls boarding school next fall 𝟅𝟈
author’s note! you can find part six here! sorry in advance as this chapter is incredibly angsty…
PART SEVEN — JOHN HUGHES MOVIE
ENTER THE DEAD POETS. . .
Charlie adjusted his shirt as he and the other boys filed out of their bunk and hastily rushed to meet Aurora by the oak tree. He was nervous. He wasn’t sure he had a reason to be, but nonetheless his heartbeat rattled against his rib cage. Todd and Neil walked closely next to each other, Neil’s flannel jacket loosely slumped over Todd’s shoulders. Knox shoved Cameron as the two playfully bickered, while Meeks and Pitts mediated the two.
Charlie should’ve been interacting with his friends.
As the group descended down the grassy hill, he swallowed hard. Was this happening? Sure, he was fine with sneaking off the campgrounds and having fun, but with Aurora? The girl who scrambled all his thoughts and left him utterly confused?
Knox paused his playful argument with Cameron, spinning on his heels and walking backwards. He eyed Charlie as his brow furrowed. “Everything okay?”
Charlie simply nodded. “Yeah, just tired. We won’t be out long, right?”
“Why, are you scared of getting caught?” Meeks asked.
“No, Meeks,” hissed Charlie. “Why would I?”
“It’ll be fun,” added Neil, his hand deathly close to Todd’s.
Charlie rolled his eyes. He wanted to believe him. He wanted to believe all of them.
The group approached the old oak tree, Neil grinning wide once he spotted Aurora. “You made it,” he said, bustling with joy.
Aurora spun around quickly at the sound of the approaching boys, grinning at Neil’s enthusiasm. Her blonde hair bounced with each sudden movement, her skirt flowing with the soft, summer wind.
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” she replied.
Charlie was in awe. Silent, all he could do was stare.
Aurora noticed. She smiled, trying to subtly ease his mind, but it only made him feel worse.
Eventually, Knox cleared his throat, grabbing Charlie’s attention. “This’ll be fun,” he repeated Neil’s words from earlier. “It’s summer. We’re young. What could go wrong?”
Charlie hated how over-optimistic Knox and Neil were.
He couldn’t protest, however. As he parted his lips, he was cut off as Neil motioned for Aurora to join their group, and with that, they started their walk towards the nearby neighborhood. They weren’t the only ones sneaking off the Vermont campgrounds. Perhaps that eased their minds a little. After all, as Knox said, they were young and here to explore—they were here to learn about themselves.
No one learned anything from constantly following the rules. Sometimes, a risk had to be taken.
Aurora wanted to test the waters.
As everyone walked, she found herself next to Charlie, making sure to keep a safe enough distance. Though, she couldn’t help but think about how his arm brushed against her knee last week. How she painted his nails, how the two talked and how he trusted her.
She shook the overwhelming thought from her mind.
“You seem quiet,” she muttered to the dark-haired boy.
“I wish people would stop pointing that out,” he replied.
Aurora cocked her head to the side. “Who else?”
“Does it matter?” He was antsy, and he disliked it.
He tried so hard not to come off as stern to her, but her questions pushed something inside of him. “I’m fine, everything’s fine, can we just leave it at that?”
“Sorry,” was all she could say in response. After that, she distanced herself, picking up the pace and walking next to Knox and Neil.
The waters were dangerous, it seemed.
Once the group made it to the nearby neighborhood, it became excruciatingly clear which house the party was being held at. There were many houses in a row, all carbon copies of each other. Aurora grimaced at the lack of diversity, her nose scrunched up as she stared.
One of the white houses in the middle had strobe lights that pooled from the open blinds, music spilling onto the dirt as angsty teenagers opened the front door.
Neil smiled, turning towards his friends. “I think this is it.”
“No shit, sherlock,” replied Charlie.
“Don’t be an ass,” added Cameron.
Aurora rolled her eyes. So did Knox, who took a sudden leap of confidence and stepped up onto the front porch.
He swung the door open. “Are we going in or what?”
Everyone nodded.
They huddled inside, immediately separating from each other to explore. Aurora searched for drinks, while Cameron, Meeks, and Pitts got lost in the living room.
Knox admired the makeshift dance floor, ‘Mississippi Queen’ by Mountain blaring through the speakers. He giggled as Todd dragged Neil towards the middle, the two absorbed in each other’s company.
“Hey, you made a deal,” said Todd. “We’re dancing.”
“Oh, come on,” stressed Neil. “I’ve got two left feet.”
Charlie bolted towards the kitchen. It was seemingly empty, providing him a sense of security. He leaned against one of the counters in the corner, sipping something sour from a solo cup he got handed as he walked in.
Aurora, a cup in her right hand, was not sure where to go next. She’d already talked to some girls she recognized, but it didn’t satisfy her. She wanted to speak to Charlie. She wanted to dance with him, to get to know him. From her spot in one of the many hallways, she could see his figure in the kitchen, the soft light highlighting his features. He didn’t see her—perhaps he didn’t care enough to look up, or maybe he was scared.
Scared that if he did, he’d make eye contact with her.
Aurora sighed. She downed the liquor in her cup, deciding she wouldn’t sulk over him. She had already tested the waters tonight, and that was enough.
The music changed seamlessly, Aurora heading towards the dance floor as ‘The Power of Love’ by Huey Lewis & The News started blaring through the room. With liquid courage in her system, she was feeling less uptight, dancing next to Neil and giggling at the lyrics of the song.
Todd silently hyped her up, pushing her towards the center of the dance floor. She closed her eyes, swaying with someone she didn’t recognize. He couldn’t have been much older than her, though with his height, he towered over her smaller frame.
He was cute. He wasn’t Charlie, but he’d do. She laughed, twirling around as the music coursed through her veins.
Charlie watched jealously from the kitchen, his eyes squinting as he finished the drink in his hand.
He then slipped out, hastily making an exit and quietly disappearing into the backyard through an unlocked screen door.
The boy she had been dancing with had his hands on her waist, the grip loose and freeing. She allowed the song to finish before separating from his touch, smiling up at him with drunken admiration.
When she turned around and eyed the kitchen, she noticed that Charlie was gone. Her expression dropped slightly and she placed a hand on Neil’s shoulder, silently letting him know that she’d be back.
She rushed into the kitchen, noticing the open screen door and the cooler air that let itself into the house. Stepping into the backyard, she saw Charlie standing there in the middle, the moonlight beaming down from the evening sky as his sneakers left imprints in the grass.
“Charlie?” She let out.
Charlie didn’t turn around. Not right away, at least. He stood there in silence, hoping that if he ignored the blonde-headed girl, she’d step back inside and leave him alone. He was wrong. He could feel her eyes on him from her spot on the back porch.
He slowly turned to face her, noticing how she leaned against the wood for stability. They both had alcohol in their system.
This wasn’t going to end well, and they both knew it.
“Would you just go back inside?” He finally replied.
Aurora noticed the bitter tone, the same one he used when the two spoke earlier. She shook her head. “No, I won’t. Not yet. What’s wrong? You’ve been cold, you’ve been silent—I mean, you’re treating me like I did something unforgivable.”
Charlie scoffed. “It’s not important, Aurora, and I don’t need you to read into it, alright?”
“Well, I am! It’s not fair,” she protested. “How can we go from enjoying each other’s company to this? Did I hurt you, or was it something I said? You wouldn’t even look at me from across the fucking room, Charlie.”
“Stop! Just stop, alright?” He wanted to yell, and he almost did. His voice was much louder now.
Aurora exhaled. “I don’t want you to hate me,” she muttered. Her voice, in comparison to his, was almost minuscule. She was afraid to increase her volume. “I don’t want you to be like this.”
“Like what?” He questioned her, his arms tight against his sides. “I’m perfectly fine.”
“No, you’re not! Stop saying that you are! Tell me what I did, and I’ll quit it,” she replied. “Please.”
Charlie’s heart hurt.
She didn’t do anything. Neil had included her, had allowed her into their group, and given her the opportunity to meet new people. No one knew it’d lead to this—a crush, one that Charlie assumed would break him if he allowed himself to feel it.
So, he did what he had to do in order to protect himself.
“Aurora, I am pleading,” he eyed her. All of his emotions were hidden away by the darkness, the moonlight doing jack shit to reveal them. Aurora knew if she went back inside and pretended this never happened, that’d that would be the end of it. She knew that he’d never admit how he felt, not unless she kept pushing him like this.
She didn’t want to push him. She knew that forcing those feelings only made things feel false or forced. So, reluctantly, she took a few steps back, her body inching closer to the screen door that opened to the kitchen.
Charlie watched her with heavy eyes. And, once she disappeared back into the white, noisy house, he blinked.
His heartbeat quickened. A tear broke, slowly falling down his face and tracing his jawline. He wiped it away with the back of his hand, swallowing all the words he could’ve said and all the feelings he wouldn’t allow himself to feel.
Aurora was gone—she was inside now, lost within the mix of people, and Charlie was alone.
Like he’d always been.

Upcoming Flicks March 2017
March 2017′s Australian cinema releases.
March 2
Miss Sloane
Elizabeth Sloane is a political lobbyist who goes a step too far and lobbies against gun control, provoking a powerful opponent. Genre: Drama/Thriller Director: John Madden Stars: Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong Recommendation: It looks alright but probably not worth a cinema trip for. Wait for it to come to home video.
Logan
Not far into the future, Logan is caring for an again Professor Xavier while hiding from the world. But when a young girl arrives with similar powers to Logan, the Wolverine cannot stay hidden any longer. Genre: Action/Sci-fi Director: James Mangold Stars: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen Recommendation: See it. It looks absolutely fantastic. Be aware though, Logan is a more mature film than the previous films in the X-Men franchise, earning it a MA15+ rating.
Jasper Jones
Jasper Jones is an Australian coming of age film based on the successful novel of the same name by Craig Silvey. 14-year-old Charlie Bucktin’s life is changed when Jasper shows him the dead body of a girl, Laura, and against the odds attempts to prove Jaspers innocence in a town where he would be immediately condemned. Genre: Drama/Mystery Director: Rachel Perkins Stars: Levi Miller, Aaron L. McGrath, Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette Recommendation: See it. It looks fantastic and has a cast to match.
Before I Fall
Samantha Kingston is stuck reliving her last day alive, until she can changed something to break free. Genre: Drama/Mystery Director: Ry Russo-Young Stars: Zoey Deutch, Liv Hewson, Logan Miller Recommendation: It looks fine but something that could easily be a spinoff of Pretty Little Liars. Skip it.
Alone in Berlin
After losing their son on a battlefield of WWII, Otto and Anna Quangel decide to resist the Nazi regime in their own way. Based on a true story. Genre: Drama Director: Vincent Perez Stars: Emma Thompson, Daniel Brühl, Brendan Gleeson Recommendation: I have never felt such tension in a trailer before. I am invested in these character and want to see the whole story. See it.
March 9
Kong: Skull Island
The King is back. After a group of travellers journey to an uncharted island, they are set upon by monsters and a giant ape, Kong. Genre: Action/Fantasy Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts Stars: Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly. Recommendation: See it. Kong is one of my favourite characters and as long as Jack Black is nowhere near this film it should be great. The trailers and marketing have been intoxicating. The sheer size of Kong is bigger than we have ever seen.
A Few Less Men
A Few Less Men is an Australian comedy and sequel to 2011’s A Few Best Men. After the death of a mate, three friends must take his dead body home to England where things turn from bad to worse. Genre: Comedy Director: Mark Lamprell Stars: Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall, Dacre Montgomery Recommendation: I kind of liked the trailer but the jokes were meant to be a lot funnier than they actually were. Skip it.
March 16
The Space Between Us
A love struck teenager who has lived on Mars his entire life comes to Earth to meet the girl he has been Skyping. He experiences our world for the first time. Genre: Adventure/Drama Director: Peter Chelsom Stars: Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino, Gary Oldman Recommendation: It looks like Room but with a Martian. Two great movies that look like they suck when they are being forced together.
Loving
Based on a true story, Richard and Mildred Loving are an interracial couple whose fight to stay together goes all the way to the Supreme Court. Genre: Biographical/Romance Director: Jeff Nichols Stars: Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton, Will Dalton Recommendation: The story looks interesting and it has been receiving very favourable reviews. See it.
A Cure for Wellness
A stockbroker must retrieve his boss from a wellness centre located in the Swiss Alps but finds the centre is more than it seems and is affected by the mysterious illness that prevents the other patients from leaving. Genre: Drama/Thriller/Horror Director: Gore Verbinski Stars: Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth Recommendation: I like the premise but it seems to be lacking some punch. See it but wait until you can rent it on home vid.
March 23
Beauty & the Beast
This is a tale as old as time. Disney is continuing their conversion from animated to live-action with their 1991 smash hit, Beauty and the Beast. Genre: Family/Fantasy/Musical Director: Bill Condon Stars: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson. Recommendation: See it. It looks fantastic. Emma Watson as Belle is perfect casting and I cannot wait to see it.
The Boss Baby
You think that little baby is so cute? Well, he isn’t. A suit wearing baby is set on bringing down the CEO of Puppy Co. Genre: Animated Director: Tom McGrath Stars: Alec Baldwin, Miles Bakshi, Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, and Lisa Kudrow Recommendation: Skip it. This is the worst idea for a movie ever. Everything about it looks terrible.
Power Rangers
The long-awaited film reboot of the classic 90s tv series is here. The Power Rangers are back and must save the world from Rita Repulsa’s wrath. Genre: Action/Sci-Fi Director: Dean Israelite Stars: Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks. Recommendation: See it. The trailers look great, bringing a John Hughes feel to the once campy team of heroes.
Life
After a crew on the international space station discover life on Mars and bring it into the station to study. Things then go horribly wrong. Genre: Horror/Sci-Fi Director: Daniel Espinosa Stars: Rebecca Ferguson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds Recommendation: With a very similar vibe to Alien, I hope there is enough original ideas in the film for it to stand on its own. 50/50
March 30
The Lego Batman Movie
Batman is back in Lego form and must protect Gotham while mentoring a young boy. Genre: Animated Director: Chris McKay Stars: Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes Recommendation: See it. Probably the best Batman have seen in years and is extremely fun and silly.
Ghost in the Shell
Based on the Japanese manga, a cyborg policewoman attempts to being down a computer hacker. Genre: Sci-Fi/Action Director: Rupert Sanders Stars: Scarlett Johansson, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han and Juliette Binoche. Recommendation: See it. There is a lot of controversy around the main character being portrayed by a white woman instead of an Asian but the trailers are very intriguing and I want to see what comes of it.
Smurfs: The Lost Village
Smurfette and friends take a journey through the forbidden forest and uncover some secrets from Smurf history. Genre: Animated Director: Kelly Asbury Stars: Demi Lovato, Mandy Patinkin, Jack McBrayer, Danny Pudi, Joe Manganiello, Rainn Wilson, Michelle Rodriguez, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter, Julia Roberts Recommendation: If it wasn’t for the voice cast, I would have written this off as a film that should go straight to home vid.... ah who am I kidding? It should go straight to home vid. Skip it.
My picks for the month of March are Kong: Skull Island, Beauty and the Beast and Logan. Tell me what you are checking out this month on Facebook, Tumblr & Twitter
-Terry.
